32A through 32K

32 is the smallest band most brands cut across their whole cup ladder rather than a slice of it, which makes it the first band where you can genuinely shop for a shape rather than hunt for a size. It is also the band where US and UK letters start diverging visibly on the same body.

Are you really a 32?

Measure snug and level directly under the bust, with no bra on or a non-padded one, and breathe normally. A reading between 31 and 33 inches (79-84 cm) is a 32 band. Nothing is added to that number: the "+4" rule was written for rigid 1950s fabric and on modern elastic it produces a band about two sizes too loose, which is how the same measurement used to be sold as a 36.

At 31 or 33 inches, try the 32 first and judge it on the loosest hook: a new band should already feel firm there, because the tighter hooks are the months of wear you have not had yet. If it will not fasten at all on the loosest hook, that is a genuine signal to go up.

Buying at a 32 band

Full-bust ranges treat 32 as a core size and cut it with deeper wires and taller side wings than a mainstream 32 of the same nominal letters. If a 32 fits in one brand and gapes in another at the same tag, the wire width is usually the difference, not the cup depth.

The fit problem this band produces most

Cup wrinkling at the top edge is common here because a 32 frame gives the fabric less horizontal room to distribute over. It usually means the cup is slightly too large or too shallow for the shape, not that the band is wrong.

Why 32D is not the same size as 42D

A cup letter records the difference between bust and underbust, not a volume, so the same letter grows with the band underneath it. On a 32 band, D works out at roughly 695 cc per cup, against 912 cc for 42D - a difference of about 31% from the same letter. Across every band this site charts:

Frequently asked questions

What underbust measurement is a 32 band?

Roughly 31 to 33 inches (79-84 cm) measured snug and level directly under the bust, with no bra or a non-padded one. Modern sizing adds nothing to that number: your band is your measurement, rounded to the nearest even size.

Is a 32 band the same in UK and European sizing?

The UK uses the same 32, but Europe calls it 70, France 85, Australia 10, and Japan and Korea 70. Only the cup letters change further, and they change differently in each system.

Does a 32D mean the same size as a 30D?

No. A cup letter is a difference, not a volume, so it scales with the band it sits on. 32D holds about 695 cc per cup, while 42D holds about 912 cc - roughly 31% different for the same letter. That is why moving a band without moving the letter changes the fit twice over.

I was measured as a 36. Why does this page say 32?

The old fitting method added four inches to the underbust measurement, which was designed for the rigid fabrics of the 1950s. On elastic modern bands it produces a band roughly two sizes too loose, which is how a 31-33 inch underbust ends up in a 36. If you were fitted that way, your real starting size is likely a 32 with a fuller cup letter than you are used to.
